Quality outdoor gear comes at a price, both literally and figuratively. For anglers looking for high-performance apparel and equipment, cost is often a barrier to entry. The environment pays a price for our outdoor pursuits, as well, when apparel and equipment that we replace and dispose of ends up in landfills, where the polyester, plastics and other petroleum-based materials can take hundreds of years to decompose. As part of a growing industry trend, Bozeman-based Simms Fishing Products has launched a new initiative — dubbed Simms ReCast — aimed at mitigating both.
ReCast is an online platform where anglers can both purchase and sell previously-owned Simms gear that still has years of useful performance ahead of it. Anglers shopping for gear on ReCast can get their hands on Simms waders, boots, apparel and other gear at a fraction of the price that new gear fetches. Those selling on the platform can earn cash or, if they’re looking to upgrade, trade-in value to use towards new Simms gear.
“Simms Recast is more than just a resale platform — it’s about fostering a stronger connection within the angling community and ensuring our gear stays in use for as long as possible,” said Ben Christensen, Head of Simms. “By making our products more accessible through resale, we’re expanding our reach and welcoming new anglers into the Simms family, all while staying true to our commitment to quality and conservation.”
Gear sold and bought on the ReCast platform is automatically covered by an extended repair and warranty program. As a result, anglers buying pre-owned Simms gear won’t have to sacrifice guarantees and service in order to take advantage of the platform.
Initially, ReCast will operate as a peer-to-peer marketplace. Anglers will sell and buy directly with each other. Down the road, Simms intends to step into the middle and manage the resale inventory directly. Whether that means that Simms will inspect used gear on the platform as part of some form of quality assurance or condition rating system remains to be seen.
“Resale is a natural fit for Simms, a brand built on quality and gear that’s made to last,” said Emily Gittins, Co-Founder and CEO of Archive. “With Recast, Simms is not only opening up its products to a broader community of anglers but also reinforcing its commitment to keep great gear going. We’re thrilled to power this program and help Simms bring circularity to the fishing world in a way that feels authentic to its brand and customers.”
Simms ReCast is live and online now.
