Deals, discounts, specials, countdowns, BOGO offers, and the like are ubiquitous during the holidays. Anglers and other could-be consumers are inundated with all manner of offers that we supposedly must take advantage of, lest regret consume our souls. What we typically see less of are holiday specials that aren’t designed to benefit consumers, but that are geared to benefit wild fisheries. To close out its 12-day holiday-themed sales event, however, Bozeman-based Skwala Fishing will be doing just that.

On Monday, December 16, Skwala will be donating 25 percent of all profits generated through sales on its website to the Wild Steelhead Coalition. Skwala held a similar offering last year, raising and donating funds for the Montana organization Save Wild Trout.

For the last 25 years, the Wild Steelhead Coalition’s mission has been simple: improve wild steelhead returns up and down the west coast of North America. The grassroots organization uses a science-based approach in its mission building and focuses intently on coalition building and designing pragmatic solutions that are viable in a complex political environment.

“When we looked around for a group to benefit from our growing holiday business, we thought it was the right thing to help steelhead. That’s where we centered squarely on The Wild Steelhead Coalition,” says Kevin Sloan, Skwala’s CEO and founder. Sloan added, “The demands of steelheading has been the inspiration for many of the products we have created at Skwala.”

“Skwala makes the type of solid gear that dedicated steelheaders rely upon and when they reached out to support wild steelhead conservation we knew it would be a great partnership,” says Rich Simms, the organization’s board member and founding member. “We have a small but mighty team that punches above its weight class and is hell-bent on helping the fish we have come to love and we embrace all opportunities to collaborate with like-minded people and companies.”

With threats to wild steelhead mounting, the need for organizations like the Wild Steelhead Coalition to be able to continue and even redouble their efforts to help bolster wild steelhead populations is more critical than ever. Given such, maybe the idea of being able to scratch an item or two off your holiday wish or gift list while simultaneously benefitting wild steelhead doesn’t sound so bad?
