One wader bag to rule them all

Is IKEA's 99 cent Frakta the world's best wader bag?

Random meetings in the woods are usually brief, and satisfied with a simple nod and no slowing of the stride as you walk past each other and carry on to your respective destinations. Not this one.

I was heading down to fish a little-known and unnamed stream near a well-known and aptly named rock-climbing destination when a climber and I met on the trail. He was carrying his ropes, belt, cams and chocks in his equipment bag, and I had my wading and fishing gear in mine.

Thanks to the efforts of U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff, a Democrat from Georgia, the fragile hydrological balance of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge will remain intact, at least for the time being. Ossoff, who beat incumbent David Perdue in the 2020 general election, made the protection of the country’s largest blackwater swamp an early-term priority. Shortly after being elected, Ossoff led a team of biologists and scientists from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S.

Is it time for anglers to ditch their ball caps?

Your trusty trucker cap is failing you when it comes to sun protection

That old, weathered ball cap that’s endured the best of adventures and is likely worse for the wear is a time-honored look. Torn and worn, faded and, let’s face it, absolutely filthy, it speaks more to the brand of the angler than to any brand that might be scrawled above the lid. It’s a statement piece, meant to promote the person beneath it.

Awareness and fly fishing

To see, or not to see … that is the question

There’s an absolutely vital element of our fly fishing that rarely shows up in our angling conversations, or makes it into the outdoor media. Now I’m not sure if that’s because this particular subject seems so obvious that there’s no need to discuss it, or if it’s just too hard to describe and quantify. Regardless, you’ll rarely see it mentioned, much less discussed.

What am I talking about? Awareness.

Gear we love right now: June 2022

What's working on, and off, the water

Fly anglers are overloaded with gear choices—rods, reels, boots, waders, lines, packs, bags, boxes, vests, apparel and more. It seems harder and harder to know what's worth coveting and what's worth ignoring. Gear reviews are a great way to explore in-depth what might be right for you, but not every piece of gear is suited to a full-length review and, even if it were, there's simply too much of it to get to. With that in mind, we periodically showcase what's working for us right now, to hopefully offer more helpful feedback on gear that's worth a second look.
