Went out to the Musky today again, this time with my friend Richie M. ReFalo. We did a little dusk session in Asbury, NJ, and right when it was getting dark (after 8-ish), the fish were rising. This was the first time since I got into fly fishing this past January that I actually rigged up for dry flies (I only nymphed and swung streamers till now). Nine foot RIO Powerflex tapered leader with a #16 Parachute Sulphur tied to the end of it was my weapon of choice, knowing that Sulphurs were hatching in the evening around where we live. I was practicing my false casts earlier on this evening and felt confident enough to present a dry fly to a rising trout that I saw when we started fishing the Asbury spot. Sure enough, as I tried to make my fly drift drag free in the current, a little Rainbow trout rose to take it. I didn't set the hook the first time. Once again, and same thing, a rise to my fly with no hook set. Third times a charm though, and as the trout attacked my fly this time, I quickly lifted my rod up out of instinct to set the hook, and the fish was on! So here is my my first trout caught on a dry fly on the surface, first time ever, first time false casting, etc.! I am psyched and will definitely be dry flying more often now that I have had this boost of confidence with a little beginners luck thrown in!! Haha!
